One in ten tree stand hunters will have an incident. Many will be injured; some will die. We all have a friend or a friend of a friend who has been severely injured, permanently disabled or worse. Reducing injuries and deaths are the obvious and certainly most important reasons to support “Project STAND”.
But what about some of the less obvious reasons to support “Project STAND”? What about newspaper headlines announcing “Hunter Loses Life in Accident”? Is that good for hunter recruitment? Is a parent going to encourage their child to take up hunting with headlines like those?
How about the business implications of tree stand accidents? Escalating product cost due to liability issues? Lawsuits, insurance, pain and suffering issues. How many more retailers would carry tree stands if they were not attached to a safety or risk management issue? How many more tree stands would be in use? How much more money could we set aside for tree stand safety projects? b
How many of us in the hunting industry have either made, sold, written about, or spoken about tree stands. How many of us grit our teeth and cringe every time we hear of another lost life or wheelchair bound hunter. How many of us have shaken our head and said “something has to be done”?
Tree stand safety is personal. Personal to every one of us in the hunting industry. We take care of our own and take pride in our safety record. Fortunately, something is being done! With proper funding “Project STAND” will reduce tree stand accidents and deaths. Without funding it will be just another good idea.
It’s time to take tree stand safety personally because it is personal.
